My interest in Art started by chance! I had some free time during ‘A’ levels and was encouraged to take up another subject to fill in time –so art it was.
I then chose to study art as part of a Teacher Training course and was lucky enough to have a lecturer, Peter Tuck, who was not only a good painter but also creative in photography, 3-D, woodwork and sculpture.
However, teaching young children, while raising a family and running a household, left little time for painting until recently! Now retirement is here, children grown and time to follow hobbies more actively. At an Art & Craft fair run locally, I sold 5 paintings and had 2 commissions. What more encouragement was needed!
I am now enjoying working in acrylics and learning all the time from fellow artists and enthusiasts. One style I particularly admire is that of Tom Thomson and The Group of Seven – Canada’s favourite artists.
Each subject matter seems to suggest using different approaches in style and technique, which is both exciting and interesting. I use utensils other than brushes to create effects- kitchen paper for misty atmospheres and torn cardboard for ‘printing’ trees!
