Nigel Hobbs has been a potter for over 30 years and is a member of the West Street Potters group that has studios at the historic Farnham Pottery. He has been an exhibiting member of Farnham Art Society for most of that time. He is also a member of a group of West Street Potters who have recently set up their own exhibiting group calling themselves ‘Ceramicus’.
He specialises in Raku fired work, the Japanese technique of firing to a temperature around 1000˚C when the hot work is taken out of the kiln and reduced in sawdust before quenching in water. This creates unpredictable and exciting surfaces. Other finishes involve decorating the hot work using horse hair - a Native American technique. He is also developing techniques using other materials to burn onto the surface of the work.
He also produces thrown stoneware or porcelain pieces all usually decorative and has been the recipient of several awards for his work.
